At the age of eleven, Ertug KORKMAZ first took up to the Trumpet studies with Professor Mehmet ERTEN at the State Conservatory of Ankara. Then, in 1975, in line with the changes in his field of interest, he was admitted to the department of Composition, becoming a student of Professors Erçivan SAYDAM, Necil Kazim AKSES and Nevit KODALLI.
In 1980, having qualified for Conducting department, he began attending the class of Professor Gürer AYKAL, along with his studies at the department of Composition.
Having graduated from both the Composition and Conducting departments of the State Conservatory of Ankara, he was sent to London on a state scholarship. There, as an advanced student he studied Composition and Conducting with Professors Alfred NIEMAN, George NICHOLSON and Alan HASELDINE at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
During the years he spent in London he also had chances to study Contemporary Music with artists who are some of the well known authorities of the Art of Music such as Hans Werner HENZE, Karlheinz STOCKHAUSEN and Peter Maxwell DAVIES.
So far, he has appeared on the programs of International Music Festivals, concerts and workshops-seminars as a Conductor and Composer in Turkey and countries round the Globe such as Japan, Italy, France, Belgium, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Denmark, Germany, Poland, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Russia, Venezuela, United Kingdom and USA.
In February 2001 his association took start with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on a CD recording of his Symphonic Poem “SHADES - AND” under his direction in London. Following the CD, it was performed by Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra (formerly called Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra) and taken in to the repertories by some others. In August 2002, the same work was performed at the opening concert of the Euro Classic Summer Music Festival, in Berlin.
In 2003 he was invited to found a new faculty and an orchestra at Baskent University in Ankara and the same year he was chosen as Turkish delegate for the IRC within the frame of International Music Council, UNESCO.
In October 2005, he made his debut with a great success as a conductor of the opening concert of the IV. Saint Petersburg International Piano Festival at the well known Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Hall, Russia.
At present he is the Music director and the Principal conductor of the Ensemble Modern Baskent, and Orchestra Academic Baskent as well as The Mediterranean Countries Youth Symphonic Orchestra.
His works include four Symphonic Poems, two Symphonies: the Rain Forest and Enuma Elish (Sumerian Myth of Creation), one Sonata (Blue) and one concerto for Guitar (World premier by Manchester Camerata) and various music for chamber ensembles, choirs and solo instruments.
