2-Year English-Language MFA Program

At Artez Fine Art, The Netherlands

The Dutch Art Institute (DAI) seeks to engage with energetic and inquisitive artists possessing a critical attitude towards the conventional art capitals and canons, by providing them with a worldwide platform for exchange and dialogue with practitioners operating at the forefront of artistic and curatorial innovation.

We employ a model of 'fleeting collectivities' in order to help students develop tailor-made connections between their own artistic practice and public domains. By means of its fluid curriculum that integrates theoretical reflection, curatorial knowledge production, collaborative hands-on projects, as well as independent research, the DAI empowers their 'engaged-autonomous' relations with various art scenes and with the world at large.

Our focus and interest is transcontinental in scope; students and faculty come from near and far: Brazil, Georgia, Nigeria, Mexico, Lebanon, Turkey, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Portugal, Korea, the US, among others.

THE DAI'S UNIQUE FORMAT

The DAI is organized in an alternative structure: for one week per month (11 times per year), our 35 students, plus faculty and guests reside at the DAI and take part in a very intense program consisting of lectures, seminars, projects, excursions, workshops, evaluations of student work which lasts from early morning until late at night when discussions continue over inspired communal dinners. Outside these so-called DAI WEEKS students are expected to manage their own time, either at their own studio or (if desired) in a studio provided by DAI. All students need to be registered in the Netherlands but their presence at the Institute is mandatory only during DAI WEEKS.

Projects:

Although fully accredited and funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education, and part of the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts, the DAI offers a space for research and production that exceeds the limits of mere art education. Rather, it operates as an "interface" between art, education and the world.

Long-term projects through collaborations with cutting edge curatorial platforms and research institutes like Manifesta, If I Can't Dance…, Casco, n.e.w.s., and the van Abbemuseum/University of Hildesheim, play a crucial role in our curriculum.

A selection of self-initiated projects:

-the DAI's Publications Project offers students the possibility to produce and publish their individual artist books in collaboration with the internationally-renowned Werkplaats Typografie in Arnhem.

-"Here As the Centre of the World" was a remarkable three-year-long curatorial and art project that took place in six cities: Beirut, Damascus, Diyarbakir, Enschede, Khartoum and Taipei (2006-2009).

-in development for the upcoming years is a new trans-spatial project with partners worldwide: "Space: The Final Frontier?" a first draft of which was presented at the March Meeting 2010, organized by the Sharjah Art Foundation.

Grant Watson (Senior Curator and Research Associate at Iniva, Institute of International Visual Arts, London) holds the ArtEZ associate professorship for 2010-2011. He acts as an advisor to course director Gabriëlle Schleijpen and as an external expert during assessments.
