Vienna's Theatre for young audience. DSCHUNGEL WIEN stages productions by Austrian as well as international artists, guest performances and co-productions.
Austrian children’s theatre makers had been demanding their own venue since 1989. Numerous working groups, draft proposals, panel discussions as well as strong lobbying with public authorities finally resulted in concrete action: In 2002 the Vienna City Council decided to finance the reconstruction and conversion of a former cinema in the MuseumsQuartier into a theatre for young audience.
The theatre in the MuseumsQuartier is located nearby “wienXtra Kinderinfo”, Vienna’s information point for children related issues, and the ZOOM children’s museum. This neighbourhood creates positive synergies and reinforces the aim of placing children’s culture in the heart of the city.
The programme covers offers for various age groups, training facilities as well as an exchange and information desk for issues related to theatre for young audience. This comprises regular cooperation with schools and the educational field, workshops and a space for seminars.
DSCHUNGEL WIEN stages productions by Austrian as well as international artists, guest performances and co-productions. The main focus is on premieres, reproductions and projects with international partners.
Children and young people are offered access to innovative art forms which go beyond the limits of traditional theatre: Dance, puppet theatre and music are shown just as well as pieces of a more experimental character and new media productions.
