Conference: Cultural aspects of the Turkish diaspora (Panel organiser: Tom Solomon)

Among the inter-disciplinary themes suggested for the conference are these pre-planned panels:

1) Migratory situations in the past and present

2) Religious transformations

3) Language and society

4) Adaptations in laws, norms and practices

We invite suggestions for further prepared panels, as well as individual papers from scholars on relevant subjects, Individual papers will as far as possible be organised in sessions according to themes.

Panel suggestions:



1. Popular culture in the contemporary (and the historical) Middle East

the political economy of popular culture
* popular culture as a conduit for connectivity in the Middle East and between the Middle East and Europe (or something similar)
* AND/OR the role of popular culture in the Middle Eastern diaspora
* performance, artistic expression and popular culture
* debating popular culture in the Middle East

2. Islamic fashion and the politics of the veil in Europe and the Middle East

3. Constructing and deconstructing ‘honour’ and violence in the Middle East and Europe

4. Urban space and urbanity in Middle Eastern cities

5. Privatization and economic change

6. Islamic finances and the economic crisis

7. Minorities in the Middle East and Middle Eastern minorities in Europe

8. Transnational Middle Eastern families and family law (Annika Rabo)

9. Patterns Dynamics and Prevalence of Cultural Polarisation (Nicolae Bulz)

10. The moderation of Islamist Movements (Liv Tønnessen)

11. ‘Connectivity’ between religious collectivities in education (Dr Hossein Godazgar)

12. City, hinterland and connectivity in the pre-Islamic Near East (Eivind Heldaas Seland)

13. Sufism (Dr. Arin Salamah Qudsi)

14. Muslim Youth in Europe: “individualisation” and “secularization”? (Synnøve Bendixsen)
